The Circle of Donations

Why it is a “Circle” and not just a “Line”

The Circle of Contributions (example)

Step 1: The Member’s Contribution (Money & Trust)

  • What they give:ย A person from the community contributes money to the crowdfunding campaign. This is not just a donation; it is an investment to become an owner.
  • What it means:ย They are contributing their savings and, more importantly, theirย trustย in the idea and the people behind it.

Step 2: The Business’s Action (Creation & Operation)

  • What it does:ย The cooperative uses the pooled crowdfunded money to start the businessโ€”rent a space, buy ovens, get ingredients, and pay the worker-owners.
  • What it means:ย The community’s trust is transformed into a real, functioning asset. It createsย jobs and productsย for the community.

Step 3: The Member’s Role (Customer & Supporter)

  • What they do:ย The same member who contributed money now becomes a loyal customer. They buy bread from the bakery, they tell their friends about it, and they choose it over a big chain store.
  • What it means:ย They are contributingย ongoing revenue and support. They have a personal stake in the bakery’s success.

Step 4: The Business’s Return (Profit & Reinvestment)

  • What it does:ย The bakery makes a profit from selling its bread. This profit is used in three ways:
    1. Shared among the worker-ownersย as a bonus, improving their lives.
    2. Reinvested in the businessย to buy a new van or improve the shop.
    3. Given back to the member-ownersย as a small dividend or a discount on future purchases.
  • What it means:ย The wealth generated by the businessย stays within the community. It doesn’t leave to make a distant shareholder rich.

Step 5: The Circle Repeats and Grows (Strengthening & Expansion)

Seeing this success, the member is more likely toย contribute againย to help the bakery expand or to fund aย newย cooperative, like a vegetable farm to supply the bakery.

The Result:

Theย memberย is happy because they have a good local bakery, they received a small return, and they see their community thriving.

Theย businessย is strong and stable because it has loyal customers and dedicated worker-owners.

Next Steps (Influence Leveraged)

The community will create the rules together. These rules will decide how everything is managed. Most importantly, each cooperative established will be owned by members who contributed for that worker cooperative campaign. This ensures the project is always owned by the people who actively support it. The leader is an integral part of the engagement with the community.

Cooperative Constitution Engagement For KZN/Easter Cape Community

Following broad community consultation and input, a non-profit company (NPC) will be formally registered. This ensures the organization is structured to serve public benefit, legally compliant, and transparently managed, laying a accountable foundation for all future development and cooperative initiatives aimed at sustainable social and economic empowerment.

Register Non Profit Company

Our first campaign will fund a Centre of Excellence. Using the Mondragon cooperative model, this volunteer-driven institution will grow worker cooperatives across the country through business acquisition, food security, and community engagement. Managed by six full-time NPC members, it will build capacity and foster sustainable economic development through structured portfolio teams and continuous skills development
